Residents of Okpuitumo community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State are counting heavy losses after a violent windstorm tore through the area in the early hours of Tuesday, destroying homes, a major church building, and economic assets valued at hundreds of millions of naira.

The storm left a trail of destruction across the community, with several buildings either partially or completely damaged.

An Assemblies of God Church was among the worst-hit, as its roof was ripped off and the structure collapsed under intense winds.

Beyond residential damage, the incident dealt a severe blow to local livelihoods. Shops and storage facilities were destroyed, while traders and farmers recorded significant losses.

One trader estimated losses at about ₦12 million after rainwater soaked goods exposed by roof damage. Poultry farmers also reported the death of thousands of birds when storm-weakened structures gave way.

Although no casualties were reported, many residents have been displaced or are now living in severely damaged homes, with limited access to shelter and basic necessities.

Community leaders have called on the Ebonyi State Government and relevant agencies to provide urgent relief materials and financial support to affected households.

Religious leaders also appealed for assistance to rebuild the destroyed church, noting that worshippers are currently holding services outdoors.

The incident highlights growing concerns about the impact of extreme weather events on vulnerable communities.

Analysts say the scale of destruction points to weak building resilience and increasing exposure to climate-related risks, particularly in rural areas.

With homes and businesses wiped out, the disaster is expected to further strain housing supply in the area, underscoring the need for stronger building standards and long-term investment in climate-resilient infrastructure.
